Bio-waste from household collected separatly and small scale composting : health risk issues

Abstract

Since the publication of the Energy Transition Law for Green Growth of August 17th, 2015, sorting at source of biowaste should be generalized in France by 2025. This includes individual and community composting. But this generalization questions on health risk, all along the collection and valorization pathway. A review of the existing literature, discussions with collectivities who already collect biowaste separately and INERIS experience were used to identify major risks during storage, collection and small scale composting of biowaste, and to gather recommendations to reduce these risks.
