Contribution to boilover and frothover quantification

Abstract

Frothing phenomena are related to the presence of water and liquid hydrocarbons in a tank heated by a fire or heaters. One may quote accidents occurred in Signal Hill (USA), Milford Haven (UK). Pernis (NL), Thessaloniki (GR), Port Edouard Herriot (F), Tacoa (VA), Yokkaichi (JN) ... each of them with important damage. One first has to distinguish between boilover and frothover, the main difference being in the piston-effect created.
